How I Navigated My Freshman Year Like a Pro
I honesty don’t remember being that nervous coming into college. However, once I started, I realized how unprepared I really was. I had endless lists, advice from family, and the anxiety of not knowing what college would actually be like, but I was more excited than nervous so I never dwelled on it for too long. There were a lot of things I thought I’d need, but as I went through my first year, I quickly learned what was essential—and what wasn’t.
From preparing academically to setting up my dorm to managing finances, there were many moving parts, and I didn’t have it all figured out from day one. But with each step, I gained more confidence. Today, I want to share everything I learned about preparing for college to help you skip the stress and focus on what truly matters for a smooth transition.
1. Academic Preparation: Setting Yourself Up for Success
College classes are a big step up from high school, so a little academic preparation goes a long way. Start by brushing up on any areas where you might need extra support, like math or writing skills. I know it may seem not important at the moment, but trust me your gonna want to remember some stuff before jumping into a college course. Look into free online courses or apps that can help you get ahead. Also, review any reading lists or syllabi if they’re available. Familiarizing yourself with what you’ll be studying can give you a strong start.

2. Organize Your Essential Supplies
One of the best things you can do is to organize all the supplies you’ll need for classes and dorm life. Make a checklist of essentials like notebooks, planners, and tech gear. Having these items ready helps you feel more organized and reduces the risk of forgetting anything. I was definitely not organized coming into college but luckily for me, I was only 30 minutes away from home. Fewww!

3. Prepare Your Dorm Room: Essentials for a Comfortable Space
Setting up your dorm room with the essentials helps make your space feel like home. Be sure to pack bedding (like Twin XL sheets and a comforter), storage solutions, and a few decor items that make you happy. Invest in items that keep your space organized, like under-bed storage or desk organizers. Don’t forget cleaning supplies and laundry essentials!

4. Financial Planning: Creating a Budget and Managing Expenses
Budgeting is crucial in college. Don’t make the mistake I did by coming to college with barely any savings. Having a financial cushion is essential, especially if you don’t plan to work during school. Looking back, I wish I’d saved much more, as I seriously underestimated how much I’d be spending. Create a monthly budget that includes costs like rent, food, books, and social activities. Look into part-time job options or work-study programs if you need additional income. I avoided working during college until I simply couldn’t afford not to. Now, I genuinely love my job, and having a steady income has been one of the best choices I’ve made—even if it means giving up a few nights out. The trade-off has been completely worth it. Managing your money wisely in college sets you up for success and helps avoid stress.

5. Mental and Emotional Preparation
BThe transition to college can be challenging emotionally, especially if you’re far from home. Prepare by building a support system with friends and family and considering what self-care practices help you feel balanced. Make time for activities you enjoy and remember it’s okay to reach out for help. Many colleges offer counseling services for students, or even reach out to me! You’re never alone.
Preparing for college is about more than just packing your bags. By getting organized, setting academic goals, and preparing mentally, you’re setting yourself up for success and making the transition much smoother. When you know what to expect, you’ll feel confident and ready to take on college life.
